Mutagenic effects of mercury pollution as revealed by micronucleus test on three Amazonian fish species.

چکیده
Genotoxic effect of mercury pollution over Amazonian fish species was evaluated by using the micronucleus test (MNT). Distinct mean frequencies of micronuclei (MN) were observed in three trophically distinct characin fish species collected in two riverine environments in the Amazon Basin: the Madeira (polluted area) and the Solimões (unpolluted area) rivers. Mean frequencies of MN observed in Prochilodus nigricans (detritivore), Mylossoma duriventris (omnivore), and Hoplias malabaricus (piscivore) from the Madeira River were significantly higher compared to the frequencies from the same species from the Solimões River. In addition, mean frequencies of MN from piscivore species were almost fivefold higher than the detritivore and/or omnivore species. We conclude that MNT in fish erythrocytes may be useful for indicating genotoxity of mercury in Amazon rivers.

Metals are the major pollutants in aquatic environment. A lot of research literature is available globally about accumulation of heavy metals in aquatic ecosystems as well as in different body organs of aquatic animals, especially fish. Heavy metals mainly generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) in aquatic animals that lead to oxidative stress production. ROS cause oxidative damage to different ...
متن کاملEffects of Lichenic Extracts (Hypogymnia physodes, Ramalina polymorpha and Usnea florida) on Human Blood Cells: Cytogenetic and Biochemical Study
Several lichen species have been used for medicinal purposes throughout the ages, and they were reported to be effective in the treatment of different disorders including tuberculosis, hemorrhoids, ulcer, dysentery and cancer. It is revealed that they may be easily accessible sources of natural drugs that could be used as a possible food supplement or in pharmaceutical industry after their safe...

Genotoxicity studies on toxic metals and their organic compounds are very important, especially so in the investigation of the effects of these compounds on the aquatic environments where they tend to accumulate. The use of endemic aquatic organisms as biological sentinels has proved useful to environmental monitoring. We assessed the mutagenic potential of tributyltin (TBT) and inorganic lead ...
متن کاملMutagenic impact on fish of runoff events in agricultural areas in south-west France.
When heavy rainfall follows herbicide application, the intense surface runoff causes stream water contamination. Aquatic organisms are then briefly exposed to a complex mixture of contaminants. The aim of the present study is to investigate the genotoxic impact of such events on fish. A model fish, the Crucian carp (Carassius carassius) was exposed in controlled conditions, for 4 days, to water...
